PayPal is a Fair Weather Friend

Does PayPal Serve the Business with One or Very Few Products?

I have worked with a number of small businesses with one, or just a few products. Two have had a newsletter or specialized magazine subscription. A few have been artists selling notecards or other products with their art. Some of these companies have gone to selling on Etsy or Amazon.

For years, PayPal was the go-to service for the business with one (or very few) product(s). Their Buy Now Buttons were very easy to set up, compared to setting up a full shopping cart system, such as Shopify or WooCommerce.

The Basic Process to Setup a PayPal Buy NowButton

Or, rather, what it used to be. It used to be called a Buy Now Button. And, it was this easy to set up.

  1. Set up a PayPal account.
  2. Set up a Product in your PayPal account
  3. Copy and paste the code into your website

While the substeps of getting the code into their site were more than many of my clients wanted to tackle, for the computer comfortable clients, it was easy enough to do on their own, once they had done it a few times with some help.

The Steps for the Viewer

The steps for the viewer were:

  1. Click the Buy Now Button
  2. This redirected the viewer to a page that is inside the PayPal system.
  3. The Viewer can check that the product they are buying matches what they thought they were buying … and the prices.
  4. The Viewer could choose to enter their own credit card, or pay through their own PayPal account.
  5. The Viewer either logged into their PayPal account or entered their credit card information.
  6. And, the deed is done.

What Has Replaced the Buy Now Button?

Now, the simple Buy Now button is deprecated, ie. in the garbage can. What has replaced it? Unfortunately for very small websites, the single Buy Now button has been replaced with a series of buttons: PayPal, Venmo, Pay Later, and Debit/Credit. If your product is a subscription, there are additional buttons for PayPal Subscription and Pay Later Subscription.

The Buy Now button had one weakness in that you could only buy (and pay for) one product at a time. Of course, that’s fine for websites with only one product.

The difficult thing is that you might not want all those buttons. It has been very difficult to find out whether you can have just the first button because it acts just like the old Buy Now button
